Thai cafe in Spitalfields, London
The site was formerly a well-known Cafe called Rosa’s, the interior of which was already lost following its closure. The design reflects something of the original Rosa’s, and refers to traditional cafe interiors with their timber benches, booth seating and wall panelling.
The scheme is centred around a series of high backed settles. The seats, backs and sides are modified to accommodate the existing building features and to form a sense of enclosure.
The panelling is based on a rationalized Victorian ogee moulding and, in order to meet the tight budget and short program, the benches were designed to be constructed off site, complete with integrated electrical fittings. The shell was largely untouched requiring only simple decorations and flooring.
